About This Climbing Route

Northern Circuit Route on Mount Kilimanjaro

The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro's extended traverse that spends much of its journey away from the busiest southern trails. It generally begins with the western Lemosho approach, reaches the Shira region and then loops around the mountain's northern side before moving toward a summit staging camp. The reward is a varied, remote trekking experience, but the route requires time and resilience.

Western forest and Shira approach

The early stages may follow the Lemosho trail from near Londorossi registration through mountain forest to the Shira Plateau. Camp choices and walking days vary among eight-, nine- and longer programmes. The western entrance allows hikers to experience the changing vegetation zones before turning toward the less-visited northern side.

Moir Valley and the northern traverse

A common route reaches the Moir area and crosses terrain beneath the northern slopes toward Buffalo or Pofu Camp, then around to Third Cave and other designated camps. The paths traverse open alpine country with far-reaching views toward the plains when weather permits. Though the track can appear rolling, each day adds distance and exposure to altitude.

School Hut, summit and descent

Some itineraries stage at School Hut or another approved summit camp before an early attempt on Kibo and Uhuru Peak. Descent routes commonly return through the southern Mweka corridor. Because the Northern Circuit has multiple variants, the precise high camp and summit approach must be checked for the selected expedition rather than inferred solely from the route name.

Who Should Choose This Route?

This route best suits trekkers with sufficient time who value quieter scenery and a more deliberate ascent schedule. A longer trip can offer additional acclimatization opportunities, but no published summit-success percentage can be guaranteed to an individual customer. Avoid selecting a hurried version solely because its title says eight days.

Preparation, Altitude and Safety

Expect several consecutive camping nights, wind exposure and long stages far from the entrance gate. Discuss equipment, meals, water supply, porter welfare, emergency communication and descent options with your operator. Severe altitude symptoms or bad weather may require a route change or immediate descent.

When to Go and What to Confirm

Clearer periods are often found around January to early March and June to October, although weather can turn rapidly. Important: one of our referenced nine-day Northern Circuit packages lists ten trekking days. That package must remain under review until the schedule is reconciled; the route guide itself is not a substitute for an approved daily itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Northern Circuit a different mountain summit?

No. It is an extended route toward Kilimanjaro's Uhuru Peak, not a separate peak.

Why allow more days?

More trekking time creates opportunities for gradual acclimatization and better spacing of long stages, but success is never guaranteed.

Where does it begin?

Many Northern Circuit itineraries begin via the western Lemosho or Londorossi access area.
