THE EXPERIENCE

Expedition Overview

8 Days Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit is a 8 day journey focused on Mount Kilimanjaro. Walk the remote northern flank of Kilimanjaro from Lemosho and Shira toward School Hut, Uhuru Peak and the Mweka descent. Each stage is designed around the distinctive landscapes and changes in altitude along this route, from the approach trail to the summit region or scenic turnaround point.

Route experience

For the daily programme, follow the sequence shown below. Named stages include Mti Mkubwa Camp, Shira 1 Camp, Moir Hut Camp, Buffalo Camp, Third Cave Camp, School Hut. Descriptions explain what to expect each day, including the type of terrain, opportunities for gradual acclimatization and the likely demands of longer walking stages. Exact start times are set by the guide around weather, group readiness and local regulations.

How should you prepare for this Kilimanjaro route?

Kilimanjaro does not require technical rock climbing on these standard trekking routes, but summit altitude is a major challenge. Fitness, a steady walking pace, adequate acclimatization and early reporting of symptoms are essential. Carry insulation for summit night and waterproof layers for the lower slopes.

Route and itinerary notes

The Northern Circuit traverses Kilimanjaro’s quieter northern slopes before summit night. The daily route stages are described individually in the itinerary below.

DAY BY DAY

Climbing Itinerary

Day 1

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa

Transfer from Moshi to Londorossi Gate for registration and continue to the Lemosho trailhead. The initial walk enters rainforest on Kilimanjaro’s western slopes, where tall trees and a humid atmosphere create a sheltered start to the climb. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp for the first mountain overnight, with an introduction to the expedition’s daily routines.
2,650 m Mti Mkubwa Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 2

Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1

Climb from the forest through heath and moorland onto the Shira Plateau. Views of Kibo and the surrounding volcanic features expand as the vegetation thins. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp with time to acclimatize and prepare for the more remote northern traverse that begins higher up the mountain.
3,610 m Shira 1 Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 3

Shira 1 across the plateau to Moir Hut

Cross the Shira Plateau, passing the Shira 2 area and continuing toward the quieter Moir Valley. The open volcanic country offers a sense of the scale of Kilimanjaro, while the increasing altitude requires controlled pacing. Settle into Moir Hut camp for the evening, with opportunities for a short guided acclimatization walk if appropriate.
4,200 m Moir Hut Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 4

Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp

Leave Moir Valley and continue along the northern circuit, where trails turn away from the busy southern approach. Optional higher ground near Lent Hills may be used for acclimatization under guide supervision. Descend or contour to Buffalo Camp, also known as Pofu, taking in broad views toward the Kenyan lowlands.
4,020 m Buffalo Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 5

Buffalo Camp to Third Cave

Follow the quieter northern slopes through open, relatively dry volcanic landscape. This stage has less overall height gain than the summit approach and is useful for consolidating acclimatization. Reach Rongai Third Cave Camp with time to rest and prepare for the high desert crossing that follows.
3,800 m Third Cave Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 6

Third Cave to School Hut

Climb steadily across the upper saddle beneath Kibo toward School Hut, the high camp for the final summit attempt. The vegetation is sparse and altitude becomes the main challenge. Arrive early enough to rest and organize warm clothing, lighting, water and snacks for the night ascent.
4,800 m School Hut Meals to be confirmed
Day 7

School Hut to Uhuru Peak and Millennium Camp

Depart during the night for the crater rim and the summit of Kilimanjaro. Progress past the upper landmarks toward Uhuru Peak only if weather, conditions and the guide’s assessment permit. After a short summit stop, descend for many hours toward Millennium Camp. The contrast between the cold summit and lower camp is considerable, so manage layers and water carefully.
3,950 m Millennium Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 8

Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate

Walk downhill through progressively denser vegetation and rainforest to Mweka Gate. The walk completes the northern traverse and provides an opportunity to appreciate the mountain’s changing ecological zones. Meet road transport for the return to Moshi after the park exit formalities.
1,640 m End in Moshi Meals to be confirmed
