Expedition Overview

Eight Days Mount Kenya Trek and Samburu Wildlife Safari

Combine a high-altitude Mount Kenya trekking adventure with wildlife viewing in northern Kenya on this eight-day private journey. The first part follows the beautiful Chogoria approach through forest, moorland and the dramatic high lakes region before a planned Point Lenana summit attempt. A descent along the Sirimon Route leads toward Samburu National Reserve, where game drives replace mountain trails for the final part of the holiday.

Two Kenyan landscapes in one itinerary

Mount Kenya's eastern slopes are known for bamboo woodland, open highlands and the scenery of Gorges Valley. On clear days, the route to Mintos provides memorable views toward Lake Michaelson and the rugged central peaks. After reaching the trekking summit at approximately 4,985 metres, the route continues north and west through Shipton's and Old Moses. Samburu then introduces a completely different ecosystem of riverine trees, dry plains and distinctive northern wildlife.

Mountain trek followed by Samburu game drives

Days two through six include the ascent and descent of Mount Kenya. Day five involves an early summit attempt and a demanding descent to Old Moses, making it the key stage for guide assessment of hiking fitness, altitude adaptation and the schedule. On day six the group leaves by Sirimon Gate and continues to Samburu, with an evening game drive if arrival and park opening conditions allow. A full day of wildlife viewing follows, with an optional extension toward Buffalo Springs only when separately authorized and quoted.

Wildlife you may encounter

The Samburu ecosystem is associated with reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk. Elephants and other mammals also inhabit the reserve, and predators may be seen, but sightings depend on wildlife movements and conditions and cannot be guaranteed. The game-drive programme is led by the assigned driver-guide and follows reserve regulations.

Accommodation and travel arrangements

The eight-day plan includes seven nights: an arrival night in Nairobi or Chogoria, four mountain nights at the designated camping or hut stops, and two nights in the Samburu area. The reference allows alternatives for the first night depending on flight arrival time. The actual property names, room or tent category, reserve entrance fees, vehicle type and airport arrangements must appear on the confirmed Olengugih Safaris quotation. Private departures can be tailored around the travellers' preferred dates; no scheduled group-departure programme is offered.

Is this combined trek and safari right for you?

The mountain section requires good fitness, preparation for cold and wet weather and the willingness to follow an experienced guide's decisions about altitude or a summit turnaround. The safari section involves longer road journeys and time in an open or closed game-viewing vehicle. Pack layers for both alpine cold and Samburu's warmer, drier conditions. As with all guided mountain journeys, the daily camp plan, safety arrangements and inclusions should be reconfirmed before accepting a booking.

Frequently asked questions

Which Mount Kenya route is used? The climb approaches through Chogoria and descends through Sirimon, not Naro Moru.

Is the mountain summit technical? The objective is the high-altitude trekking summit Point Lenana. It does not include technical ascents of Batian or Nelion.

Does the programme include Samburu safari days? Yes. The source-based plan includes an evening drive after the mountain exit when feasible, a full safari day and a final morning drive before the return to Nairobi.

DAY BY DAY

Climbing Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival at Nairobi Airport and Transfer to Your Starting Hotel

Welcome to Kenya. Meet the designated representative at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transfer to the confirmed accommodation. The reference plan allows an overnight stay in Nairobi or, for arrivals early enough to travel safely, a transfer onward to Chogoria town at Mount Kenya's eastern base. The final choice depends on flight timing, traffic, daylight and the booked hotel.

Use the remainder of the day to rest after your journey and prepare for the trekking section. Check essential personal equipment, particularly your waterproof jacket, warm sleeping layers, broken-in boots, headlamp and refillable water bottles. The trip coordinator can outline the route, transport schedule and baggage plan ahead of meeting the mountain crew. This arrival day is not a summit day and should not be counted as meaningful acclimatization. Overnight at the agreed Nairobi or Chogoria hotel, with breakfast arrangements confirmed on the voucher.

Nairobi or Chogoria hotel (flight-dependent) Bed and breakfast, subject to confirmed booking
Day 2

Drive to Chogoria and Hike Through Forest to the Bandas

Travel toward Chogoria and meet the mountain guide, porters and cook for a route briefing and equipment check. From town, a suitable vehicle follows the mountain-access road toward the forest, with the actual drop-off determined by road conditions and park permissions. The walking section leads through bamboo stands and montane forest, where the air cools and the pace shifts from road travel to trekking.

The reference itinerary describes a short introductory hike of about 7 km to Chogoria Bandas, near 3,000 metres above sea level. The precise distance depends on the driving endpoint. Your guide will set a measured pace so everyone can adjust to carrying a daypack, hiking on uneven ground and the first change in altitude. Enjoy the forest surroundings and settle into the designated Bandas accommodation or camping area. Before dinner, discuss the next day's route and how the group is responding to the elevation.

7.00 km 3,000 m Chogoria Bandas Lunch and dinner
Day 3

Chogoria Bandas to Nithi Road Head Camp

Continue above the lower forest environment, following the eastern Mount Kenya approach toward the Nithi road-end camping area. The trail moves through stretches of bamboo, dense shrubs and increasingly open vegetation as the mountain's upper landscape begins to appear. Some sections may be muddy or uneven after rain, so keep a deliberate pace and remain within sight of the guide.

The source describes approximately 9 km of walking to a camp around 3,300 metres. On arrival, the support crew prepares the designated campsite and the group has time to rest, eat and organize the next day's equipment. A relaxed afternoon is helpful before the more significant climb toward Mintos. This is also a suitable point for the guide to discuss altitude symptoms, check hydration and adapt the following day's pace if anyone needs additional time. Overnight in tents at the agreed Nithi Road Head location, subject to current park arrangements.

9.00 km 3,300 m Nithi Road Head Camp Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 4

Nithi Road Head to Mintos Camp Above Gorges Valley

Today the scenery becomes unmistakably alpine. Climb through moorland toward the broad ridges above Gorges Valley, where weather permitting you may enjoy views toward Mugi Hill, Giant's Billiards Table and the dramatic cliffs surrounding the Lake Michaelson basin. The route rises toward the Mintos area, leaving behind the taller vegetation of the previous camps and entering exposed, colder terrain.

Approximately 12 km of hiking is indicated in the reference, with a substantial ascent from roughly 3,300 metres to Mintos near 4,200 metres. Allow time for steady uphill progress and frequent short rest stops. The exact line and viewpoints depend on weather and the guide's choice of trail. At camp, prepare thermal layers, gloves and headlamps for the very early summit departure. The support team serves dinner while the guide assesses each participant's fitness and any symptoms associated with altitude. An earlier rest is advisable before the long day ahead.

12.00 km Approximately 4–6 hours (source estimate) 4,200 m Mintos Camp Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 5

Mintos to Point Lenana, Shipton’s and Old Moses Camp

Begin before dawn for the planned ascent to Point Lenana, approximately 4,985 metres. The final approach crosses cold, exposed high-mountain ground where a headlamp, warm gloves and secure footing are essential. When visibility and group conditions cooperate, reaching the summit around sunrise offers remarkable views over the main peaks. The guide must remain free to postpone, shorten or abandon the attempt if weather, altitude symptoms or fatigue create an unacceptable risk.

The source itinerary then descends through the Shipton's Camp area on the Sirimon side and continues toward Old Moses Camp, around 3,300 metres. This combines the summit effort with a lengthy descent and may be exceptionally demanding after several days of climbing. The exact route, walking time, meal stops and ability to complete the whole stage in a single day require advance approval from the operating mountain guide. Pace yourself on downhill sections and do not rush because of the advertised schedule. Dinner and overnight are planned at Old Moses, subject to the safety-reviewed camp arrangement.

3,300 m Old Moses Camp (subject to guide approval) Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 6

Old Moses to Sirimon Gate, then Travel to Samburu Reserve

After breakfast, complete the final mountain walk down the Sirimon Route through open heath and into the greener lower slopes. The descent to Sirimon Gate covers approximately 9 km in the reference programme, with the changing vegetation marking the end of the trek. Meet the transfer vehicle, complete exit formalities and travel north into Samburu's warmer and drier landscapes.

Check in at the selected Samburu safari lodge or tented camp and enjoy time to freshen up after the mountain section. If the road journey and park opening times allow, head out on an afternoon or early evening game drive with your safari driver-guide. The ecosystem supports animals such as reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk and elephants, although sightings are never guaranteed. Return to the lodge or camp for dinner. Lodge selection, vehicle arrangements and reserve entry fees must be confirmed in the written quotation.

9.00 km Approximately 3–4 hours walking (source estimate) 2,650 m Samburu safari lodge or camp Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 7

Samburu National Reserve: Full Day of Wildlife Viewing

Rise early for the cooler hours when wildlife is often more active and set out on a guided game drive through Samburu National Reserve. The landscape contrasts dramatically with Mount Kenya: dry savannah, rocky hills and vegetation along the Ewaso Ng'iro River provide habitat for northern Kenya species including beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra and gerenuk. Elephants may also be encountered, while predators are less predictable.

Return to the lodge or camp for a midday break and lunch, then continue with a second game drive in the afternoon. Your driver-guide will choose routes based on conditions and reserve rules rather than following a fixed list of animal sightings. The source also refers to nearby Buffalo Springs Reserve; visiting it would require a separate agreement and any applicable entry fees, and is not assumed in the base schedule. Enjoy a relaxed evening and dinner at the agreed accommodation, reflecting on the transition from high-altitude trekking to safari country.

Samburu safari lodge or camp Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 8

Samburu Morning Game Drive and Return to Nairobi

Begin with a final early game drive if the reserved park access, departure schedule and conditions permit. The cooler morning offers another opportunity to watch wildlife before returning to camp for breakfast and checking out. Set off south toward Nairobi, passing the northern highlands and agricultural landscapes of central Kenya along the way.

The source programme describes a stop around Nanyuki for lunch before continuing to the capital. The exact stop and whether lunch is included will be confirmed according to the travel schedule. Arrival is generally planned for later in the day, depending on road traffic and breaks. Drop-off will be at the agreed Nairobi hotel or airport, provided the timing is compatible with your onward flight. This concludes the eight-day Mount Kenya trek and Samburu wildlife safari. Additional hotel nights and unscheduled activities can be arranged separately on request.
