What makes this Mount Kenya itinerary distinctive?

Mount Kenya routes cross forest, moorland and exposed alpine terrain. The best preparation includes day hikes with elevation gain, footwear already used on long walks and layered clothing for cold or wet conditions. Point Lenana is a nontechnical trekking objective, while Batian and Nelion are separate technical mountaineering ascents.

DAY BY DAY

Climbing Itinerary

Day 1

Nairobi to Chogoria and Lake Ellis

Transfer from Nairobi through the eastern highlands toward Chogoria, complete park procedures and meet the mountain support team. The first trek approaches the alpine lake basin with views back toward the Gorges Valley and northern moorlands. Establish the overnight camp near Lake Ellis and discuss the next day’s ascent, hydration and warm-weather gear for the changing mountain conditions.

Day 2

Lake Ellis to the high camp near Mintos

Continue above the lake through ridges and moorland, gradually gaining elevation toward the upper Gorges Valley. The exposed mountain landscape opens toward the central peaks as the trail approaches Mintos. Arrive with time to rest, eat and organize clothing and headlamps for the early summit attempt. The original source identifies Mintos as tonight’s camp; the following day inconsistently names Shiptons, so that transition must be confirmed.
12.00 km About 5 hours 4,270 m Mintos Camp (confirm) Breakfast, lunch and dinner (source reference)
Day 3

Point Lenana summit and return via Sirimon

Begin before dawn for a demanding summit ascent toward Point Lenana, the nontechnical trekking summit at 4,985 metres. After sunrise, descend toward the northern side of Mount Kenya, passing the Shiptons area and Mackinder Valley before the Sirimon exit and transfer. This is a long day involving substantial descent and vehicle timing. The exact overnight-to-summit access, route and daily walking distance require operator verification before sale.
