What makes this Mount Kenya itinerary distinctive?

Mount Kenya routes cross forest, moorland and exposed alpine terrain. The best preparation includes day hikes with elevation gain, footwear already used on long walks and layered clothing for cold or wet conditions. Point Lenana is a nontechnical trekking objective, while Batian and Nelion are separate technical mountaineering ascents.

Route and itinerary notes

Chogoria is known for dramatic gorges, alpine lakes and scenic high ridges. The daily route stages are described individually in the itinerary below.

DAY BY DAY

Climbing Itinerary

Day 1

Nairobi to Chogoria Bandas

Travel from Nairobi across Kenya’s central highlands to Chogoria, the eastern approach to Mount Kenya. Continue toward the forest entrance and the Chogoria Bandas area, where the expedition begins amid bamboo and montane woodland. The first day is deliberately gentler, allowing time for park formalities, meeting the crew and arranging equipment. Prepare for nights in much colder conditions higher on the mountain.
5.00 km About 2–3 hours 2,790 m Chogoria Bandas Lunch and dinner (reference)
Day 2

Chogoria Bandas to Lake Ellis

Ascend through heath and increasingly open ground toward Lake Ellis. On clear days, look for views toward Ithanguni, Mugi Hill and the distinctive plateau landscape. The walking is a steady introduction to alpine conditions; take breaks as needed and avoid racing to camp. Arrive near Lake Ellis in time to explore the immediate lakeshore and enjoy the evening scenery before dinner.
9.00 km About 3 hours 3,455 m Lake Ellis Camp Breakfast, lunch and dinner (reference)
Day 3

Lake Ellis to Mintos Camp

Follow a high ridge and reconnect with the Chogoria route above the spectacular Gorges Valley. The landscape becomes more rugged, with mountain streams, exposed moorland and wide views toward the upper peaks. Progress to Mintos Camp, around 4,200 metres, where the crew prepares for the pre-dawn summit. Spend the afternoon recovering, drinking fluids and organizing warm layers and headlamps.
12.00 km About 5 hours 4,200 m Mintos Camp Breakfast, lunch and dinner (reference)
Day 4

Point Lenana summit and traverse to Old Moses

Begin in darkness and work gradually toward Point Lenana, the trekking summit of Mount Kenya, hoping to reach the summit area near sunrise. After enjoying the alpine panorama when conditions allow, descend toward the Shiptons area on the north side. Continue through Mackinder Valley and the moorland to Old Moses Camp. The combination of an early ascent and long descent makes this the toughest day; the guide must adjust the pace to the group.
24.00 km Source estimates 15 hours 3,300 m Old Moses Camp Breakfast, lunch and dinner (reference)
Day 5

Old Moses to Sirimon Gate and Nairobi

Have breakfast at camp and continue downhill through lower moorland and forest to Sirimon Gate. Meet the driver for the return to Nairobi, with the journey concluding after park exit procedures and vehicle transfer. This is a short walking day compared with the summit effort; however, allow sufficient travel time for the road journey.
