THE EXPERIENCE

Expedition Overview

10 Days Kilimanjaro Shira Route is a 10 day journey focused on Mount Kilimanjaro. A Shira Plateau approach with high volcanic landscapes, acclimatization stages and a trek toward Uhuru Peak before return to Moshi. Each stage is designed around the distinctive landscapes and changes in altitude along this route, from the approach trail to the summit region or scenic turnaround point.

Route experience

For the daily programme, follow the sequence shown below. Named stages include Shira 1 Camp, Shira 2 Camp, Barafu Camp, Mweka Camp. Descriptions explain what to expect each day, including the type of terrain, opportunities for gradual acclimatization and the likely demands of longer walking stages. Exact start times are set by the guide around weather, group readiness and local regulations.

How should you prepare for this Kilimanjaro route?

Kilimanjaro does not require technical rock climbing on these standard trekking routes, but summit altitude is a major challenge. Fitness, a steady walking pace, adequate acclimatization and early reporting of symptoms are essential. Carry insulation for summit night and waterproof layers for the lower slopes.

Route and itinerary notes

Shira starts relatively high on the plateau and calls for particular attention to acclimatization. This 10 day version includes explicitly stated transfer or hotel days; see each numbered stage below.

DAY BY DAY

Climbing Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Moshi and equipment briefing

Transfer from the airport to the pre-climb accommodation in Moshi. Meet the mountain team, inspect personal equipment and review the planned Shira approach. The first day is reserved for preparation and should be separated from the number of walking days on the mountain.
Moshi hotel (confirm) Meals to be confirmed
Day 2

Londorossi to Shira 1 Camp

Drive to Londorossi for park formalities and continue toward the Shira entry point. Begin walking through high shrubland and giant heather toward the Shira Plateau. The route begins higher than many rainforest approaches, making careful acclimatization planning particularly important. Establish camp at Shira 1 for the first mountain overnight.
Shira 1 Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 3

Shira 1 to Shira 2

Continue across the broad volcanic plateau where the terrain is open and views of the mountain can be spectacular in clear weather. The day involves gentle climbing and time to observe the unusual vegetation of the high moorland. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp and maintain hydration as the programme prepares to enter higher, rockier terrain.
Shira 2 Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 4

Shira Plateau to the western high camp

Continue through more remote volcanic country toward the western slopes. The high Shira landscape includes sparse vegetation, rock formations and broad panoramas. The source describes an additional high-camp stage before Lava Tower; its exact location and services should be confirmed by the operator before departure.
Western high camp (confirm) Meals to be confirmed
Day 5

Lava Tower and acclimatization exploration

Walk toward the striking Lava Tower formation and the rocky lower slopes below the Western Breach. The higher daytime elevation allows an additional acclimatization opportunity if the guide judges conditions suitable. Prepare for significant temperature changes and exposed ground, and return to the designated campsite after the day’s walking.
Lava Tower area camp (confirm) Meals to be confirmed
Day 6

Barranco and Karanga Valley

Descend toward Barranco Valley before tackling the Barranco Wall section and continuing across the southern flank of Kibo. The terrain changes between scree, rocky paths and sheltered hollows before approaching the Karanga area. Follow the guide’s instructions on the steeper scrambling sections and reserve time for rest at camp.
Karanga Camp (confirm) Meals to be confirmed
Day 7

Karanga Valley to Barafu

Climb toward Barafu on exposed alpine terrain. The day’s purpose is to gain the final high camp without exhausting the group ahead of the summit effort. Organize all cold-weather clothing and the headlamp, eat early and prepare for a night departure.
Barafu Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 8

Barafu to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp

Begin the final ascent in darkness, moving steadily through the upper scree toward Stella Point and the summit if conditions allow. The mountain summit reaches 5,895 metres and demands care in wind and freezing temperatures. After the summit, descend toward Barafu and continue to the lower Mweka Camp to recover from the strenuous day.
Mweka Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 9

Mweka Gate and Moshi

Descend to the park exit through greener rainforest and complete the formalities at Mweka Gate. A vehicle returns the group to Moshi for rest and follow-up arrangements. Any hotel night and onward transport should be specified in the final confirmed quotation.

Day 10
