THE EXPERIENCE

Expedition Overview

6 Days Kilimanjaro Marangu Route is a 6 day journey focused on Mount Kilimanjaro. Hut-based Kilimanjaro climb along Marangu, with a longer high-altitude acclimatization programme. Each stage is designed around the distinctive landscapes and changes in altitude along this route, from the approach trail to the summit region or scenic turnaround point.

Route experience

For the daily programme, follow the sequence shown below. Named stages include Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut, Kibo Hut. Descriptions explain what to expect each day, including the type of terrain, opportunities for gradual acclimatization and the likely demands of longer walking stages. Exact start times are set by the guide around weather, group readiness and local regulations.

How should you prepare for this Kilimanjaro route?

Kilimanjaro does not require technical rock climbing on these standard trekking routes, but summit altitude is a major challenge. Fitness, a steady walking pace, adequate acclimatization and early reporting of symptoms are essential. Carry insulation for summit night and waterproof layers for the lower slopes.

Route and itinerary notes

Marangu follows an established hut network rather than a fully tented ascent. The daily route stages are described individually in the itinerary below.

DAY BY DAY

Climbing Itinerary

Day 1

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

After registration at Marangu Gate, start the mountain route through cool rainforest. Tree cover gradually thins near Mandara Hut, where the first night introduces the group to basic mountain accommodation and daily routines. A short optional outing can be discussed with the guide if everyone is comfortable.

Day 2

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Walk uphill from the forest into grassy moorland, with broad views toward Kibo and Mawenzi in clear conditions. Follow a controlled pace as sleeping altitude rises. Reach Horombo Hut with enough time to rest and plan the acclimatization walk scheduled for the following day.
Source indicates 4–6 hours 3,720 m Horombo Hut Meals to be confirmed
Day 3

Horombo Hut acclimatization day

Remain based at Horombo and take a guided daytime walk toward the higher Kibo approach before returning to the same hut to sleep. This outing introduces additional altitude without moving the overnight camp. Use the afternoon to recover, eat well and report symptoms rather than trying to cover excessive distance.
3,720 m Horombo Hut Meals to be confirmed
Day 4

Horombo Hut across the Saddle to Kibo Hut

Traverse the increasingly barren Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The trail gains height steadily through volcanic scree and high desert. Reach Kibo Hut around 4,700 metres, prepare gear and water for summit night and rest as early as possible.

Day 5

Kibo Hut, Uhuru Peak and return to Horombo

Leave in darkness for the strenuous upper climb toward Gilman’s Point and the crater rim. Continue to Uhuru Peak only when guide assessment, weather and the group’s condition permit. After the summit attempt descend via Kibo to Horombo Hut. The day requires extensive effort at altitude and care during the long descent.

Day 6

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate and Moshi

Finish the six trekking days by descending through moorland and the lower rainforest, passing the Mandara area on the route to Marangu Gate. Exit the park and travel to Moshi as arranged. The original source numbers airport transfer days separately from these six mountain days.
