THE EXPERIENCE

Expedition Overview

9 Days Kilimanjaro Rongai Route is a 9 day journey focused on Mount Kilimanjaro. An extended Rongai expedition featuring a Mawenzi Tarn acclimatization day and a high-altitude summit attempt before descent via Marangu. Each stage is designed around the distinctive landscapes and changes in altitude along this route, from the approach trail to the summit region or scenic turnaround point.

Route experience

For the daily programme, follow the sequence shown below. Named stages include Rongai 1 Camp, Mawenzi Tarn Hut, Kibo Hut, Horombo Hut. Descriptions explain what to expect each day, including the type of terrain, opportunities for gradual acclimatization and the likely demands of longer walking stages. Exact start times are set by the guide around weather, group readiness and local regulations.

How should you prepare for this Kilimanjaro route?

Kilimanjaro does not require technical rock climbing on these standard trekking routes, but summit altitude is a major challenge. Fitness, a steady walking pace, adequate acclimatization and early reporting of symptoms are essential. Carry insulation for summit night and waterproof layers for the lower slopes.

Route and itinerary notes

Rongai approaches the mountain from the north before descending through the Marangu side. This 9 day version includes explicitly stated transfer or hotel days; see each numbered stage below.

DAY BY DAY

Climbing Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Moshi and climbing briefing

Arrive in northern Tanzania and meet the operator for the pre-climb briefing and equipment check. Discuss the Rongai route’s approach from the north of Kilimanjaro, the planned altitude progression and any medical or logistical concerns. This is a hotel and preparation day rather than a hiking day.
Moshi hotel (confirm) Meals to be confirmed
Day 2

Transfer to Nalemoru and hike to Rongai 1

Travel to the northeastern trail access near Nalemoru, completing registration and local entry procedures as required. The trail begins near farmland and pine forest, then climbs gradually through a quieter side of Kilimanjaro. Reach the first Rongai camp with time to rest and prepare for the higher slopes.
Rongai 1 Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 3

Rongai 1 to Kikelewa area

Continue uphill through heather and moorland, with views toward the rugged Mawenzi massif in clear weather. The northern approach is often drier than the southern forest routes but remains exposed to changing conditions. Walk steadily to the Kikelewa area, using the afternoon for acclimatization and recovery.
Kikelewa Camp (confirm) Meals to be confirmed
Day 4

Kikelewa to Mawenzi Tarn Hut

Climb toward the dramatic spires of Mawenzi, passing beyond much of the remaining vegetation before reaching the tarn basin. The camp is set in steep volcanic scenery and feels markedly different from the lower mountain. Take the afternoon slowly to recover from the altitude gain and enjoy short exploration only if advised by the guide.
Mawenzi Tarn Hut Meals to be confirmed
Day 5

Acclimatization near Mawenzi Tarn

Remain in the Mawenzi Tarn area for a dedicated acclimatization day. A carefully chosen outing toward the saddle provides gentle exposure to higher ground before returning to the same sleeping elevation. The aim is to prepare for Kibo rather than to cover a long distance. Report headaches, nausea or any other altitude symptoms promptly to the team.
Mawenzi Tarn Hut Meals to be confirmed
Day 6

Mawenzi Tarn across the Saddle to Kibo Hut

Cross the broad high-altitude saddle separating Mawenzi and Kibo. The trail is open, volcanic and often windy, with little shade. Arrive at Kibo Hut beneath the upper summit slopes and rest before the overnight attempt. Prepare water, food, headlamp and insulating clothing for a very early start.
Kibo Hut Meals to be confirmed
Day 7

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Horombo Hut

Start the difficult summit ascent in darkness on zigzag paths over loose scree to Gilman’s Point, then continue toward Uhuru Peak if weather and the guide’s assessment allow. Pause briefly near the summit before descending toward Kibo and farther down to Horombo Hut. The combination of high altitude and substantial descent makes this a demanding day.
Horombo Hut Meals to be confirmed
Day 8

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Continue downward through moorland and forest via the Mandara area toward Marangu Gate. The vegetation becomes greener and the air warmer as altitude decreases. Complete exit formalities and return by vehicle to Moshi for rest.
Moshi hotel (confirm) Meals to be confirmed
Day 9

Departure or optional onward safari

The original nine-day programme includes a final transfer or optional extension after the mountain route. Confirm the destination, vehicle arrangements and any extra hotel night separately; this day does not add another trekking stage.
End of itinerary Meals to be confirmed
