THE EXPERIENCE

Expedition Overview

8 Days Kilimanjaro Rongai Route is a 8 day journey focused on Mount Kilimanjaro. Approach Kilimanjaro from the drier northern side on the Rongai trail, with broad mountain views and a descent toward Marangu. Each stage is designed around the distinctive landscapes and changes in altitude along this route, from the approach trail to the summit region or scenic turnaround point.

Route experience

For the daily programme, follow the sequence shown below. Named stages include Rongai One Camp, Kikelewa area camp, Mawenzi Tarn Hut, Kibo Hut, Horombo Hut. Descriptions explain what to expect each day, including the type of terrain, opportunities for gradual acclimatization and the likely demands of longer walking stages. Exact start times are set by the guide around weather, group readiness and local regulations.

How should you prepare for this Kilimanjaro route?

Kilimanjaro does not require technical rock climbing on these standard trekking routes, but summit altitude is a major challenge. Fitness, a steady walking pace, adequate acclimatization and early reporting of symptoms are essential. Carry insulation for summit night and waterproof layers for the lower slopes.

Route and itinerary notes

Rongai approaches the mountain from the north before descending through the Marangu side. This 8 day version includes explicitly stated transfer or hotel days; see each numbered stage below.

Day 2

Rongai trailhead to Rongai One Camp

Travel toward Nalemoru, complete park entry formalities and begin the trail on the northern side of Kilimanjaro. The route passes cultivated land and forest before climbing toward more open terrain. Reach Rongai One Camp with views out toward the Kenyan plains when conditions are clear.

Day 3

Rongai One via Second Cave to Kikelewa area

Gain elevation toward Second Cave and enjoy an increasingly open landscape overlooking Kibo and the eastern slopes. Continue toward the Kikelewa area near the Mawenzi foothills, leaving the main path for a quieter moorland trail. Rest at camp after a longer walking stage.
Source estimates 6–7 hours Kikelewa area camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 4

Kikelewa to Mawenzi Tarn

Climb more steeply toward the dramatic volcanic spires of Mawenzi, reaching a sheltered tarn basin where little vegetation remains. The scenery is striking and the altitude noticeably higher. Source estimates 3–4 hours Mawenzi Tarn Hut Meals to be confirmed
Day 5

Mawenzi Tarn across the Saddle to Kibo Hut

Walk across the open volcanic Saddle toward Kibo Hut, the staging point for the summit attempt. Expect sparse vegetation, high exposure and cold conditions. Arrive with time to hydrate, prepare warm clothing and rest before the overnight climb.
Source estimates 5–6 hours Kibo Hut Meals to be confirmed
Day 6

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Horombo Hut

Begin the summit effort in the night on steep scree toward Gilman’s Point, continuing toward Uhuru Peak if weather and guide assessment permit.
