THE EXPERIENCE

Expedition Overview

6 Days Kilimanjaro Machame Route is a 6 day journey focused on Mount Kilimanjaro. A six-day Machame trek through rainforest, the Shira Plateau and Barranco Wall before a summit attempt and descent via Mweka. Each stage is designed around the distinctive landscapes and changes in altitude along this route, from the approach trail to the summit region or scenic turnaround point.

Route experience

For the daily programme, follow the sequence shown below. Named stages include Machame Camp, Shira Camp, Barranco Camp, Barafu Camp, Mweka Camp. Descriptions explain what to expect each day, including the type of terrain, opportunities for gradual acclimatization and the likely demands of longer walking stages. Exact start times are set by the guide around weather, group readiness and local regulations.

How should you prepare for this Kilimanjaro route?

Kilimanjaro does not require technical rock climbing on these standard trekking routes, but summit altitude is a major challenge. Fitness, a steady walking pace, adequate acclimatization and early reporting of symptoms are essential. Carry insulation for summit night and waterproof layers for the lower slopes.

Route and itinerary notes

Machame approaches from the south and includes the Shira Plateau and Barranco sector. The daily route stages are described individually in the itinerary below.

DAY BY DAY

Climbing Itinerary

Day 1

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Drive from Moshi to Machame Gate for registration and a safety briefing before beginning the ascent. The route enters humid rainforest, where tree cover and uneven terrain make pacing important. Move steadily uphill toward Machame Camp as the trail rises through a ridge system, leaving the lowlands behind. Rain is possible even in otherwise dry seasons, so carry waterproof layers and keep valuables protected.
3,000 m Machame Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 2

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Climb beyond the forest into heather and open moorland. The trail gains height over a rocky ridge before extending west toward the Shira Plateau, an immense volcanic landscape with broad views. The walking is steeper in places than the first day. Arrive at Shira Camp for a chance to rest and pay attention to hydration and any effects of altitude.
3,840 m Shira Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 3

Shira Camp via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Leave Shira and cross exposed high country toward Lava Tower, reaching a much higher elevation during the day before descending to Barranco. This climb-high, sleep-lower pattern provides an important opportunity for acclimatization, although it does not eliminate altitude risk. The landscape changes to stony alpine desert before the route enters Barranco Valley, where distinctive giant groundsels appear.
3,960 m Barranco Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 4

Barranco Wall and Karanga Valley to Barafu

Negotiate the Barranco Wall early in the day with the support of your guide; the terrain includes short scrambling sections requiring care and steady footing. Continue across ridges and through Karanga Valley, then gradually gain height toward Barafu Camp, the staging point for the summit attempt. Arrange warm layers, headlamps, water and food before turning in for an early rest.
4,640 m Barafu Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 5

Barafu to Uhuru Peak and down to Mweka

Depart in the night for the highest and toughest section of the trek. Ascend loose volcanic scree toward the crater rim and Stella Point, continuing toward Uhuru Peak if the guide judges conditions and acclimatization adequate. The summit is at 5,895 metres, where cold, wind and thin air demand caution. After a brief summit stop, descend by the same upper route and continue farther down to Mweka Camp.
3,080 m Mweka Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 6

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Moshi

Walk downhill through the increasingly dense forest toward Mweka Gate. Conditions can be slippery after rain, particularly on the lower trails. Complete park departure procedures and reunite with road transport for the return to Moshi. Check whether hotel accommodation, extra transfers and onward travel are included in the final offer.
1,640 m End in Moshi Meals to be confirmed
