THE EXPERIENCE

Expedition Overview

8 Days Kilimanjaro Machame Adventure is a 8 day journey focused on Mount Kilimanjaro. An eight-day Machame itinerary including arrival, mountain trekking, a summit attempt and departure logistics. Each stage is designed around the distinctive landscapes and changes in altitude along this route, from the approach trail to the summit region or scenic turnaround point.

Route experience

For the daily programme, follow the sequence shown below. Named stages include Machame Camp, Shira Camp, Barranco Camp, Barafu Camp, Mweka Camp. Descriptions explain what to expect each day, including the type of terrain, opportunities for gradual acclimatization and the likely demands of longer walking stages. Exact start times are set by the guide around weather, group readiness and local regulations.

How should you prepare for this Kilimanjaro route?

Kilimanjaro does not require technical rock climbing on these standard trekking routes, but summit altitude is a major challenge. Fitness, a steady walking pace, adequate acclimatization and early reporting of symptoms are essential. Carry insulation for summit night and waterproof layers for the lower slopes.

Route and itinerary notes

Machame approaches from the south and includes the Shira Plateau and Barranco sector. This 8 day version includes explicitly stated transfer or hotel days; see each numbered stage below.

DAY BY DAY

Climbing Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Moshi and expedition briefing

Arrive in northern Tanzania and transfer to accommodation in or near Moshi. Meet the climbing coordinator for an introduction to the Machame itinerary, check footwear and cold-weather layers, and discuss any outstanding equipment needs. The mountain walk starts the following day. Accommodation and private transfer services must be clearly listed in the confirmed quotation.
Moshi hotel (confirm) Meals to be confirmed
Day 2

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Drive to Machame Gate for permits and registration, then enter the mountain’s dense southern rainforest. The path climbs consistently toward Machame Camp, passing through the first ecological zone of the expedition. The weather may be humid or rainy, so keep waterproof layers accessible and travel at a pace suitable for the group.
Source suggests 5–7 hours 2,850 m Machame Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 3

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Leave the rainforest behind and climb onto a steeper rocky ridge across heath and moorland. Views open toward the Shira Plateau and higher volcanic scenery as the route approaches Shira Camp. The higher altitude makes pacing and hydration increasingly important. Overnight on the plateau following a day of gradual acclimatization.
Source suggests 5–7 hours 3,840 m Shira Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 4

Shira Camp via Lava Tower to Barranco

Proceed across exposed volcanic terrain toward Lava Tower and the Western Breach area before descending into Barranco Valley. This up-and-down profile helps introduce the body to higher altitude while the overnight camp remains lower than the day’s high point. Barranco provides dramatic scenery under steep volcanic walls and a useful place to rest before the next ascent.
3,950 m Barranco Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 5

Barranco to Barafu Camp

Continue through the Barranco and Karanga sector, negotiating steep ground and shorter scrambling passages en route to the summit staging camp. Reach Barafu, where cold air and exposed ridges signal the beginning of the high mountain zone. Finish equipment checks, organize warm clothing and headlamps, and take as much rest as possible before the very early summit departure.
Source suggests 4–6 hours 4,600 m Barafu Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 6

Barafu to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp

Leave camp overnight for the ascent to the crater rim and Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro. The path crosses loose volcanic surfaces, with the final summit decision depending on guide assessment, weather and altitude tolerance. Descend the upper slopes and continue to Mweka Camp after the summit effort, allowing extra time because fatigue and cold can affect walking speed.
Long summit day 3,068 m Mweka Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 7

Mweka Gate and return to Moshi

Descend through rainforest to Mweka Gate and leave the national park. The final sections may be muddy after rain, so walking poles can help with the descent. Road transport then returns the group to Moshi for rest and onward arrangements.
Source suggests 3–4 hours 1,640 m Moshi hotel (confirm) Meals to be confirmed
Day 8

Departure or separately arranged extension

The source programme includes a departure or optional travel day after the mountain trek. Allow adequate time for airport transfers or any separately booked safari extension. This day is not another hiking day and should not be counted toward the number of nights spent camping on Kilimanjaro.
