THE EXPERIENCE

Expedition Overview

8 Days Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route is a 8 day journey focused on Mount Kilimanjaro. Explore the western approach and scenic Shira Plateau with a longer Lemosho programme before attempting Uhuru Peak. Each stage is designed around the distinctive landscapes and changes in altitude along this route, from the approach trail to the summit region or scenic turnaround point.

Route experience

For the daily programme, follow the sequence shown below. Named stages include Mti Mkubwa Camp, Shira 1 Camp, Shira 2 Camp, Barranco Camp, Karanga Camp, Barafu Camp. Descriptions explain what to expect each day, including the type of terrain, opportunities for gradual acclimatization and the likely demands of longer walking stages. Exact start times are set by the guide around weather, group readiness and local regulations.

How should you prepare for this Kilimanjaro route?

Kilimanjaro does not require technical rock climbing on these standard trekking routes, but summit altitude is a major challenge. Fitness, a steady walking pace, adequate acclimatization and early reporting of symptoms are essential. Carry insulation for summit night and waterproof layers for the lower slopes.

Route and itinerary notes

Lemosho starts in the west before crossing Shira and joining the southern summit approach. The daily route stages are described individually in the itinerary below.

DAY BY DAY

Climbing Itinerary

Day 1

Londorossi trailhead to Mti Mkubwa

Transfer from Moshi toward Londorossi Gate, complete permits and begin hiking from the forest trailhead. The first stage is a relatively short ascent through humid rainforest to Big Tree Camp, also called Mti Mkubwa. Settle into camp, organise warm layers for the evening and prepare for a longer climb the following day.
7.00 km Source estimates 3 hours 2,750 m Mti Mkubwa Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 2

Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

Ascend from the rainforest into heather moorland and climb toward the Shira Plateau. The terrain becomes steeper and more open with expansive views of Kilimanjaro. Cross upland streams and ridges before reaching Shira 1, where the group spends the night at a higher elevation.
10.00 km Source estimates 6–7 hours 3,550 m Shira 1 Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 3

Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp

Cross the Shira Plateau on an exposed moorland trail to Shira 2 Camp. The relatively short day allows time for acclimatization and rest before the higher Lava Tower stage. Watch the weather, as cold winds and changing cloud cover can affect the plateau even during a clear morning.
8.00 km Source estimates 3–4 hours 3,840 m Shira 2 Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 4

Shira 2 via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Continue toward the Lava Tower formation in alpine desert, reaching a higher point before descending to Barranco. The climb-high, sleep-lower pattern is intended to support acclimatization. The Barranco Valley offers striking mountain scenery under the huge volcanic wall that the group will tackle next.
11.00 km Source estimates 6–7 hours 3,950 m Barranco Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 5

Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp

Climb Barranco Wall using the guide’s instructions on the short scrambling sections and continue across ridges toward Karanga Valley. This shorter day creates useful recovery time while crossing steep, uneven terrain. Arrive at Karanga Camp and rest before the push to the higher summit staging camp.
5.00 km Source estimates 4–5 hours 3,930 m Karanga Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 6

Karanga Camp to Barafu

Ascend steadily on rocky, exposed ground toward Barafu Camp. The terrain is largely alpine desert, and warm clothing is important once the sun drops. Complete final equipment checks, eat early and rest ahead of the midnight summit departure.
4.00 km Source estimates 2–4 hours 4,700 m Barafu Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 7

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp

Depart before dawn for the steep, demanding climb to the crater rim and Uhuru Peak, if conditions allow. The summit zone can be extremely cold and the descent is long. Return below Barafu and continue to Mweka Camp for the final mountain night. Take careful steps on loose volcanic material, especially when tired.
19.00 km Source estimates 14–16 hours 3,100 m Mweka Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 8

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Moshi

Complete the eighth trekking day with a descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate and the park exit. Meet the arranged vehicle for the return to Moshi. The source also includes an airport arrival day before the first trek and departure arrangements afterward, which should be counted separately from these eight mountain days.
End in Moshi (confirm) Meals to be confirmed
