Route experience

For the daily programme, follow the sequence shown below. Named stages include Big Tree Camp, Shira 2 Camp, Barranco Camp, Karanga Camp, Barafu Camp, Mweka Camp. Descriptions explain what to expect each day, including the type of terrain, opportunities for gradual acclimatization and the likely demands of longer walking stages. Exact start times are set by the guide around weather, group readiness and local regulations.

How should you prepare for this Kilimanjaro route?

Kilimanjaro does not require technical rock climbing on these standard trekking routes, but summit altitude is a major challenge. Fitness, a steady walking pace, adequate acclimatization and early reporting of symptoms are essential. Carry insulation for summit night and waterproof layers for the lower slopes.

Route and itinerary notes

Lemosho starts in the west before crossing Shira and joining the southern summit approach. The daily route stages are described individually in the itinerary below.

DAY BY DAY

Climbing Itinerary

Day 1

Londorossi Gate to Big Tree Camp

Drive from Moshi toward the western approach to Kilimanjaro, register at Londorossi Gate and continue to the Lemosho trailhead. The first walk leads through the lush rainforest toward Big Tree Camp, also known as Mti Mkubwa. Look for the contrast between the shaded forest and the open volcanic country ahead, but allow the hiking group time to settle into a sustainable pace.
2,780 m Big Tree Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 2

Big Tree Camp across Shira to Shira 2

Climb away from the forest through heath and moorland onto the Shira Plateau. The wide volcanic landscape offers views of the upper slopes and the remnants of the ancient Shira volcano. The source itinerary moves toward Shira 2 for the second night, making this a demanding day of ascent and distance. Rest and monitor how the group responds to the higher sleeping elevation.
3,900 m Shira 2 Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 3

Lava Tower acclimatization and Barranco

Cross into alpine desert on the way toward Lava Tower, a high landmark on the southern circuit. The route reaches about 4,640 metres before losing elevation toward Barranco Camp, where unusual giant groundsels and the high volcanic walls dominate the setting. This profile is intended to support acclimatization, not guarantee freedom from altitude illness.
Source estimates 6–7 hours 3,960 m Barranco Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 4

Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp

Tackle the famous Barranco Wall with the guidance of the mountain team. There are hands-on scrambling sections followed by ridges overlooking Karanga Valley. Continue to Karanga Camp and use the remainder of the day to recover and prepare for the higher route. The shorter stage creates room for a more measured summit approach.
4,035 m Karanga Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 5

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Proceed toward Barafu across sparse alpine desert with views toward Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain is exposed and rocky, so wind protection and steady footing are important. After reaching camp, organize summit clothing and food, hydrate and rest before the very early departure.
4,640 m Barafu Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 6

Barafu to Uhuru Peak and down to Mweka

Leave after midnight and climb by headlamp on the final steep approach toward Stella Point and the crater rim. Continue toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres when conditions allow, then begin a long descent past Barafu into lower altitude. Reach Mweka Camp after a physically demanding day. Any climber with severe altitude symptoms must follow the guide’s descent and emergency decisions.
3,080 m Mweka Camp Meals to be confirmed
Day 7

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Complete the final downhill section through the rainforest and meet the transfer vehicle at the park exit. Return to Moshi after the closing formalities and arrange any onward journey separately. This is the last trekking day in the seven-day route.
10.00 km Source estimates 4–5 hours 1,800 m End in Moshi Meals to be confirmed
