Lake Mburo National Park

Overview

Lake Mburo National Park is one of Uganda’s most accessible and ecologically diverse parks. Located in Kiruhura District, it lies about 240 kilometers west of Kampala, making it a convenient 4-hour drive from the capital. Covering around 370 square kilometers, the park features rolling savannahs, acacia woodlands, rocky hills, wetlands, and five interlinked lakes, with Lake Mburo being the largest. This rich mix of habitats supports a wide variety of wildlife, making the park a top destination for nature lovers, photographers, and eco-tourists.

The park is home to a large population of impalas and is one of the few places in Uganda where you can see zebras and elands. Other wildlife includes buffaloes, hippos, warthogs, waterbucks, topis, oribis, and crocodiles. Though lions and elephants are absent, which makes the park safer for walking safaris, leopards and hyenas can still be seen. Birdlife is abundant, with over 300 species, including the African fish eagle, papyrus gonolek, saddle-billed stork, and the elusive shoebill.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities such as game drives, boat cruises, horseback riding, nature walks, and cycling. Cultural tours offer insight into the local Banyankole people, especially the Bahima pastoralists known for their Ankole cattle. These activities provide a well-rounded safari experience with both wildlife and cultural elements.

The park’s location along the Kampala–Mbarara highway makes it a great stopover when traveling to other major parks like Queen Elizabeth or Bwindi. Accommodation ranges from budget campsites to mid-range lodges and luxury eco-resorts, catering to all types of travelers. Lake Mburo National Park offers a peaceful, wildlife-rich experience in a compact setting. With its diverse landscapes, unique species, and range of activities, it is an ideal destination for short safaris, weekend getaways, or a relaxing break on a longer Uganda tour.
