The journey begins with an early morning departure from Nairobi at around 6:00 AM, heading north towards Nanyuki (1,950m). This scenic 4–5 hour drive takes you through lush coffee and tea plantations, as well as the rolling plains of central Kenya. A brief stop in Nanyuki town allows for final preparations, including last-minute gear shopping and acclimatization. From Nanyuki, a short drive takes you to Sirimon Gate (2,650m), where park registration and entry formalities are completed before starting the trek.
The first day’s hike is a gentle 9km trek that takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. The trail winds through montane forest, home to buffalos, colobus monkeys, antelopes, and rich birdlife. As you ascend, the landscape transitions into bamboo and heather zones, revealing stunning views of the mountain. The hike is moderate and offers a perfect introduction to the trek. By late afternoon, you will arrive at Old Moses Camp (3,300m), a cozy mountain hut offering dormitory-style accommodations. Here, you will enjoy a warm meal, a briefing from your guide, and an early night to prepare for the next day’s longer trek.
After an early breakfast at Old Moses Camp, the day’s trek begins with a gradual ascent through moorlands and alpine vegetation. The route crosses Liki North River before entering the expansive Mackinder’s Valley, one of Mount Kenya’s most scenic landscapes. This day’s hike is longer and more challenging than the first, but the gradual incline helps with acclimatization. Throughout the trek, you will enjoy breathtaking views of Mackinder’s Valley, the surrounding peaks, and unique high-altitude plant species like giant lobelias and groundsels.
The final stretch towards Shipton’s Camp (4,200m) is steeper and requires a slow, steady pace to conserve energy. Shipton’s Camp is located at the base of Mount Kenya’s main peaks – Batian, Nelion, and Point Lenana. Arriving in the afternoon, you will have lunch and time to rest. An optional acclimatization hike in the evening is recommended to help your body adjust to the altitude. Dinner is served early as you prepare for the challenging summit attempt the next morning.
Summit day begins before dawn, with an early wake-up at 2:00 AM. After a light snack, the final ascent to Point Lenana (4,985m) begins under the star-lit sky. The climb is steep and challenging, with rocky terrain and freezing temperatures. However, reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable experience. As the sun rises, you’ll witness a breathtaking panoramic view of Mount Kenya’s peaks, the Aberdares, the Laikipia Plateau, and Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance (on clear days). After celebrating and taking photos at the summit, the descent begins back to Shipton’s Camp for breakfast.
After resting, the trek continues down the same route towards Old Moses Camp (3,300m). The descent is faster but requires caution as you pass through familiar landscapes, retracing your steps through Mackinder’s Valley and moorlands. After arriving at Old Moses Camp, you’ll enjoy a hearty dinner and a well-deserved night’s rest.
The final day of the trek begins with a relaxed breakfast at Old Moses Camp, followed by a leisurely descent back to Sirimon Gate (2,650m). This final 9km trek takes approximately 2–3 hours and offers a last chance to spot wildlife, including bushbucks, monkeys, and bird species. Once at Sirimon Gate, you’ll receive your completion certificates, marking the end of an incredible adventure.
From Sirimon Gate, a vehicle will transfer you back to Nanyuki town, where you can have lunch and freshen up before beginning the 4–5 hour drive back to Nairobi. You will arrive in Nairobi by late afternoon or early evening, concluding your 4-day Mount Kenya adventure.
