Gishwati Forest National Park

Gishwati Forest National Park

Gishwati Forest National Park is Rwanda’s newest national park. The government established it in 2015 to preserve and restore an important forest corridor. You’ll find it in Rwanda’s western region, along the biodiverse Albertine Rift. The park includes two forests—Gishwati and Mukura—spanning about 34 square kilometers. These forests provide a vital home for many plant and animal species, some found nowhere else. The park stands out for its rich primate population. Visitors may spot chimpanzees, vervet monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, olive baboons, and colobus monkeys. Birdwatchers can enjoy over 80 species, including the Rwenzori turaco and grey crowned crane. The forest features hardwoods, bamboo, and more than 60 tree species, creating a lush, vibrant landscape.

Travelers can enjoy a wide range of experiences in Gishwati-Mukura National Park. Guided primate treks lead visitors into the forest to observe chimpanzees and other monkeys up close. Nature walks and birdwatching offer peaceful encounters with the region’s diverse plants and birds. The park also connects travelers with local communities. Guests can take part in farm stays, traditional dances, beekeeping, handicraft workshops, and tea plantation tours. These activities provide a meaningful look into rural Rwandan life.

Conservation drives the mission of this park. Rwanda created Gishwati-Mukura to promote eco-tourism and protect endangered habitats. Teams are actively restoring damaged areas and reconnecting forest patches. These efforts support wildlife and create jobs for nearby communities. The park is easy to reach by road, taking just 2–3 hours from Kigali. Its location between Volcanoes and Nyungwe National Parks makes it a perfect stop for nature lovers. With its wildlife, greenery, and cultural richness, Gishwati-Mukura offers a rewarding adventure in Rwanda’s scenic highlands.
